Wikis and Emerging Technology

What is a Wiki and how can it be used as a collaboration tool in education? According to Wikipedia a wiki is defined as follows: "A Wiki or wiki (pronounced "wicky", "weekee" or "veekee") is a website (or other hypertext documents collection) allowing users to add content, as on an Internet forum, but also allows anyone to edit the content. "Wiki" also refers to the collaborative software used to create such a website." We will look at Wikis as tools both inside and outside of the classroom. We will look at the greatest source of information made available on a Wiki, Wikipedia, Wikipedia is a free-content encyclopedia that anyone can edit. We will discuss the potential benefits and pitfalls of using Wikis. We will discuss what is a Wiki community and how it is managed.

Hello Steve,

Great photo of your expedition! One quick idea I had to share in reference to using wikis in the classroom. I read about this on Tom Lauer's blog and downloaded Instiki to install on my iBooks in my classroom. I can not wait to try it out with my students. I am looking for creative lesson ideas if you have any links to share on using wikis with middle school and high school science students.

Also A Fellow "Empty Nester",
John Blake
